A Visit to Cana Island Lighthouse

I have been to Cana Island Lighthouse more times than I can remember. Thinking of it brings back great memories. My parents brought me there as a boy. I brought my boys there when they were young. They came back as adults with their families. I have been coming to Door County for many years and became somewhat of a tour guide for friends and family members. I was always asked to take them to see Cana Island Light house. I'll bet I've climbed those lighthouse stairs fifty times.

If I close my eyes and think of it, I’m there. Sometimes I travel back to a cool fall day. The waves and seagulls are background music. Tourists smile and say hello as they pass by. Some of my favorite memories are watching my boys play on the grounds around the lighthouse in the summer. I can still hear their laughter as they explored the island.

Last Christmas at a family gathering I asked my sons if they remember playing on Cana Island when they were young. They all smiled and said, “Dad, those are some of our favorite memories. We will never forget.”

My wish is that we all take a little time to enjoy the simple things in life. Create as many magical memories with your family as you can. Life passes by in the wink of an eye.  Store them in your heart and visit them from time to time.

It is located northeast of Baileys Harbor on a peninsula between Moonlight Bay and North Bay. A three-hundred-foot-long natural causeway links Cana Island to the mainland and is a convenient way for visitors and workers to travel to the light, but it can at times be flooded due to the constantly fluctuating level of Lake Michigan.

A favorite for many visitors is the walk up the 97 steps of the tower’s spiral staircase towards the gallery deck. The lighthouse keeper had to walk up and down the same steps each night with lard to keep the light burning!  At the top, you’ll be able to see incredible views of Lake Michigan and the Door County Peninsula. I’m sure you will never forget the beautiful vista.

Cana Island is open from May to October seven days a week. You’ll be able to visit anytime between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., with the final tower climb starting at 4:30 p.m. each day.

Tickets (Includes entrance to the island, keeper’s quarters, and light tower.)

Groceries and Supplies for your Door County Visit

Vacationers in Door County have many choices when it comes to shopping. Repeat visitors typically have a routine for buying groceries and supplies. Some visitors or families with larger parties buy bulk supplies before their trip. One possible outlet is Costco or their local grocery store. This works for groups that are driving less than a day to arrive. It also depends on how long their vacation will last and where they will be staying.

Some groups up for a weekend getaway may prefer to buy a few food and supply items on the peninsula but, plan to go out for meals more. Many visitors don't want to cook on vacation. There are plenty of great restaurants in Door County. Most are listed with links on our website. There are also numerous free publications available for visitors in local shops.

For those who want to buy groceries and supplies on the peninsula here are some ideas:  Piggly Wiggly is a great grocery store located in Sister Bay. Shopko is also in Sister Bay. Shopko can be compared to a mini Walmart and has a pharmacy. The Pioneer Store in Ellison Bay is a very nice smaller grocery store located in town on route 42. The Fish Creek Market is also a smaller local grocery store located in town on Route 42 in Fish Creek. The Main Street Market is in Egg Harbor on Route 42. It is a larger grocery store and one of our favorites.

In Sturgeon Bay, there are several grocery stores, a Walmart and a Target. The two main in grocery stores in Sturgeon Bay are Econo Foods and Pick and Save. Sturgeon Bay is a bit of a drive if you are in the middle of the Peninsula. If you are picking up groceries and supplies, you may want to stop there on your way to your peninsula destination. Sturgeon Bay is a little over a half hour drive from sister bay.

There are two hardware stores we visit from time to time when we visit. There is an Ace Hardware in Sister Bay on the corner of Route 42 and ZZ and Nelson's hardware in Fish Creek on Route 42 near the drive-in theater. Shopko in Sister Bay also sells hardware supplies. Lambert Lumber on Route 42 in Sister Bay is also a good source for hardware supplies.
